An ode to small

I’d rather fight for small, independent businesses. To give them the service and opportunities to succeed, just like the big guys.

Technology has opened the door to anyone with value to offer. Bigger is no longer the advantage it once was. Now caring is the advantage, and independent businesses care more.

Why?

Because small is not big.

When you’re big, what matters is scale and efficiency.

Big spreads the resources further but thinner

Big accepts spillover and dropoff. Offcuts and waste are okay because big can make up for it with speed and reach and volume.

Big doesn't make it nicer, big makes it faster.

Big doesn't finish, big does enough.

Big grows when the parts are good. Not all, not even most, just enough. Nothing has to be great as long as it’s mostly good. So then it's okay for big if some parts are not good. Big can make up for that too.

But big doesn't mind, because big doesn't want to be loved by you, they just want to be accepted by most.

You matter less than they because you don’t make them successful, they do.

What about Small?

Small doesn't do more. Small does better.

Small doesn’t build fast and accept the waste. Small is careful and resourceful.

Small is slow and close to the detail.

Small can’t spread thinly everywhere, so small builds deeply just here.

Small smooths off the edges. Small finishes well.

Small cares what you think.

Small is here only. Small can't be over there too. So small needs you because there's no one else here to serve.

Small tries harder.

Small cares.

Small is going to win.

Here’s to you small.
